Through assemblages featuring photographs of cropped human figures, Sheree Hovsepian consistently produces a sense of the body in her artwork, which often creates a link to the viewer’s awareness of their own physical consciousness. Her process includes macramé, wood carvings, and ceramics, all handmade by the artist. She uses these objects as a form of collage, often juxtaposing and mirroring her geometric shapes with photographs, which is evident in Radio. She also includes other materials, such as found objects, fabric, paper, wood, and string. “I feel an urge to work with my hands in an additive process as opposed to the way I see straight photography,” she said. This sensual and fluid approach allows for a creative freedom that departs from the traditional limitations of the medium, which is so often involved with precision and control.

“The materials have agency. The work is the result of a collaboration between myself and the inherent properties of the materials, space, and time I am working with.”
